how to join

AVSO is open for all non-profit (non-governmental or public) organisations which have an interest in the development and promotion of long-term voluntary service in Europe.

Being a member of AVSO allows the organisation:

  • to be represented in the European institutions on issues of relevance to the promotion of long-term voluntary service, such as legal status of volunteers, the European Voluntary Service & other policy and/or programme developments;
  • to receive first-hand information on developments in long-term volunteering at the European level;
  • to network with organisations of similar interests & to exchange experience, good-practice and information;
  • to contribute to the development of civil society in Europe.

Procedure to join

Organisations interested in becoming AVSO's members (either Observer or Full member) have to send to the Secretariat:

-         Two letters of recommendations: one from an AVSO's Full Member and one from a recognised voluntary service organisation or two from two AVSO's Full members.

-         The AVSO application form.

What are the different kinds of membership?

AVSO Membership fee structure

Full membership

Full members play an active role in policy making and have full representation by AVSO in the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council on issues relating to volunteer status, the European Voluntary Service, youth, mobility & other issues of relevance to long-term voluntary service organisations. Full members are entitled to all AVSO's information services and discounts for certain activities (seminars and publications). Full members must subscribe to the objectives of the organisation and enter a formal agreement specifying annual payment and a 6 month notification period of withdrawal from AVSO. They are invited to participate in the bi-annual plenary meetings of AVSO.

Observer membership

Organisations interested in becoming a full member of AVSO are entitled to be an 'observer' member for a maximum period of 2 years. During this time the organisations are entitled to participate in the AVSO plenary meetings & will be included in consultations concerning policy making and European representations. However the organisations will not be given the right to vote. After 2 years, the organisations must decide whether to be actively involved as a full member or to become a subscriber.
